Fridge Friends: Time Together

The luckiest 2,000 square feet in Austin.

Fall(ish) Greetings, Fridge Friends.

With school starting, Labor Day behind us, and cold snaps way down into the 80s, it’s actually starting to feel like Fall.

My daughters, Shelby and Zoe, have just started 10th and 11th grades at Anderson High School (Go Trojans!). Maybe it’s our watch collecting event this week, but I’ve been thinking about their limited time under our roof, and I’m reminded why I started the Red Fridge Society two years ago…

When I sold Square Root in 2021, my daughters were in the 5th and 6th grades. Even though we’d just spent a year together in lockdown, time left with them already felt fleeting.

Indeed, boyfriends have become constant fixtures in my life.

I have a whole monologue on how I architected my life after exiting Square Root, but the main idea was to have total control over my time. I am often asked: Are you going to do another one? Folks are surprised when I immediately answer “no way” (or something more colorful). Although I want to work hard on my passions, I don’t want work to interfere with band and choir shows, or a carefree month in Europe with the family.

The Red Fridge Society was the illogical conclusion from that line of reasoning. I wanted to expand my impact on Austin entrepreneurship, but I didn’t want to build something I’d become beholden to with a big staff and complex operations. So I designed a community for down-to-earth, accomplished founders who could help each other through the journey and be trusted with a door code. (If that sounds like you, I have a few door codes left.)

The Red Fridge Society was built on a simple idea: luck isn’t found online — it’s created when we unplug, show up for each other, and share our most precious resource: time together.

In this issue: Watches with Wine, Ballet with Stephen, Lunch with M&A, Coffee with Founders, Ice with Benefits, and the Fest is back.

Wait, what’s this? This is the once-a-month newsletter from Austin’s luckiest entrepreneur club, the Red Fridge Society. You can always unsubscribe here.

Top of the Fridge

  • Watch Now! This Friday is our highly anticipated Wine & Watches event, featuring Napa wines and three local watch enthusiasts sharing their stories and insane collections. Wear something for show-and-tell.

  • Dancing for Duos. Next week, we have a unique couples night (we’ll still let you in solo). Stephen Mills is doing a fridge-side chat to talk about his creative process over 25 years at Ballet Austin. Stephen is a legend, having produced over 50 original dance works, and we are lucky to have him in such an intimate setting.

  • Caffeinated Horizons. This Thursday is a special edition of our Founder Coffee Tasting featuring the founders of Far Horizon Coffee. Come hear how a lockdown hobby and a misunderstanding birthed a business.

  • Lunch Society. We’re bringing back our lunch series with a discussion on the state of M&A led by Fridge Magnate and co-founder of Speed M&A, Robyn Siers.

  • Bloody Cool. Magnate Dr. Mike Hasegawa is leading a discussion on metabolic health, featuring a free blood draw with their new (painless!) at-home blood panel.

  • Texas-Sized & Block-Sized. The Fridge is always THE stop on the Texas Venture Fest, and this year, we've recruited our neighbors to throw a block party and host emerging VCs. If any of our VC Fridge Friends out there would like to co-host, I have a few highly discounted sponsorship spots.

Yes, very FESTive. Just wait until we add the neighbors!

  • Austin Fresher. Last month, I announced we’re opening up a few free spots at the Fridge each quarter for recently relocated, experienced founders. We still have 1 left this quarter. Sound like you or someone you know? Apply for Austin Fresh here.

  • Market my Words. We decided to actually try some marketing, so we refreshed the website and started posting on LinkedIn and Instagram. Follow along.

The Monthly Magnate

What types of entrepreneurs are part of the Fridge community? Behold! Our freshest newsletter feature: The Monthly Magnate.

The September Magnate is Robyn Siers.

Magnate Siers has been counsel for hundreds of M&A deals, including mine!

Robyn Siers spearheads the M&A practice at JonesSpross, representing strategic and financial buyers and sellers of all sizes with a distinctive specialization in Speed M&A™. This method-driven approach to M&A, developed by JonesSpross, employs cutting-edge technologies, risk assessments, and strategic playbooks to streamline the M&A process.

Robyn began her career at Trilogy, a global software company, in sales and marketing, followed by a tenure at Marsh and McClennan, a leader in risk management and insurance services, where she led the development of their usability department. Robyn then integrated her business background with a legal career, starting in venture capital fund formation and corporate matters, working at Cooley LLP for more than seven years. She earned both her J.D. and her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of California, Berkeley.

When Robyn isn’t closing deals, she is chasing sunshine on Austin hikes, her kids across the house, and the perfect cabernet with her husband.

Fridge Factoids: I worked with Robyn at Trilogy a few decades ago, and Robyn was my counsel when I sold Square Root. Robyn will also present the state of M&A at our next Lunch Society at the end of the month.

August Leftovers

We were officially back in full swing for the dog days of summer… Coffee Tastings, Design Sessions, Tiki Bars, Poker Tourneys, Beer Tastings, Win Celebrations… it was quite the month.

Ice Ice Crazy. We are obsessed with details at the Society, and gmy favorite example is our branded, flavored ice cubes. We produce our own lemon juice, lime juice, and cold brew on a weekly basis, and create limited editions according to our mood. Even I have to admit it’s getting a little silly. Come find your flavor.

The Red Freezer holds secrets and delights.

Happy Birthday to my buddy Guillermo, and nice job crushing Fridge Karaoke.

Even the Fridge dressed up for our Tiki Summer Party.

That’s a wrap for our September newsletter.

Be cooler than necessary, and I hope to see you Fridge-side soon.
